Phone Consultation - 15-30 minutes
An informal conversation about your concerns, a brief description of your child’s background and needs, and if you have a pediatrician or developmental specialist (i.e. psychologist) referral.
Screening - 10 minutes
Screenings are held at preschools or daycare centers with written parent permission. This is a quick and easy way to check if your child’s speech and language skills are developing on track. Screenings can indicate if your child has difficulties in certain areas, and Elizabeth can provide insight as to what you can do to encourage development. If a child performs poorly on a screening, Elizabeth may recommend a full evaluation or may recommend a follow up 3 months later. You will receive a short one page written report of your child’s performance.
Evaluation – 1-hour direct contact
A comprehensive speech and language evaluation may be recommended by your child’s pediatrician. An evaluation is an in-depth assessment of child’s speech and language skills, to determine if your child may have a communication disorder. Evaluations are customized to the individual needs of the child. Elizabeth will score and analyze your child’s performance and will generate a detailed report. Following the evaluation, you will review the results with Elizabeth and discuss recommendations. If therapy is recommended, Elizabeth will explain the details, including the specific areas that will be addressed in therapy, the length of each therapy session and the weekly frequency.
Therapy – 1-hour
At Communication Station, we believe in a play-based developmentally appropriate method of intervention for very young children. We believe in making therapy as fun and engaging as possible to get the most out of our time together. Your child’s therapy goals can be incorporated into most any play schemes – role playing/creative drama, games, arts and crafts, reading books, singing songs, finger rhymes etc.
Therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes in length and may be scheduled once or twice a week. For very young children (ages birth to 3), parents are often encouraged to join the session as well. Progress will be reviewed with you at the end of each session and tips/homework for practice will be given to reinforce skills learned during the session.
